The Neighborhood @ Worship
Ministry leaders around the world have
learned firsthand the power of media and music in the worship
event ranging from Gregorian chant to alternative rock, from
medieval frescos to video movie clips. But worship doesn’t have
to be limited to the senses of sight and sound. God is
specifically calling us to facilitate the development and
presentation of worship that is multi-sensory in its approach
with opportunities during the worship event to present ourselves
to God, and open ourselves to God, through the use of smell,
touch and taste as well. Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill
Fellowship explains, “Everything in the service needs to preach
—architecture, lighting, songs, prayers, fellowship, the
smell — it all preaches. All five senses must be engaged to
experience God.”
The preparation of such a worship experience
becomes communal in scope with the talents of all utilized in
the worship life of the church. From children to the elderly,
opportunities for the inclusion of the entire neighborhood’s
giftedness as acts of worship become paramount.
Through the worship event, we seek to provide
the necessary means for worshipers to learn new God language,
challenged by new metaphors for the Holy, in an environment that
is safe, welcoming, stimulating and inclusive.
